Sofia in antiquity was a Thracian settlement called Serdica. This name was possibly originated from a Thracian tribe named Serdi. Romans gave to the city the composite name Ulpia Serdica after the Emperor Marcus Ulpius Traianus. Ulpia comes from the Latin word lupus and means wolf. The Byzantines were referring to the city as Serdonpolis (Σερδών πόλις) which means the city of the Serdi and Triaditza which means trinity in Greek. The Arab traveller Idrisi called the city Atralissa and the crusades called it Strelitsa. The name Sofia of which the city is known today comes from the Saint Sofia Church and means wisdom.
