Sofia, Bulgaria

The statue of Sveta Sofia built in 2000 and replaced the statue of Lenin in the city center of Sofia. There were many controversial opinions among the locals about this statue. For many, the erotic appearance of the statue doesn't look appropriate to a Christian Saint. Others support that it is very likely the sculptor was aiming to show the attractiveness of wisdom (sophia in Greek) and that would justify the erotic appearance. What do you think?

Heh, I guess women never had it easy throughout history, and nowdays, not even as a statue But, since it was made by Bulgarian artist, seems that he was aiming to show the beauty that comes with wisdom

Wasn’t the problem that the artist modelled the statute on the Greek goddess of wisdom rather than the Saint whose name was used.

@travelonthebrain the Greek goddess of wisdom is the Athena. I don’t think that resamples Athena this statue. Amd I’m not so sure that this is related with Saint Sofia (or Sofia the martyr) too. That’s why the claims about sophia (wisdom) sound more valid to me

@stefanos.politis.photography well, it doesn’t seem to depict a Christian martyr too so let’s stick with the wisdom

I think that the statue is very beautiful and totally fits the image of Sofia as a modern city and capital.
