The eleventh labour of Herakles was to steal the golden apples from the garden of Hesperides. The trees were a gift from Gaia to Hera and Zeus for their wedding and their golden fruits were able to give immortality to those that eat them. This garden was thought to be located at the Iberian peninsula where today Portugal is. That's why in modern Greek the golden apples or oranges are called with the word 'portokali' which means 'something from Portugal'
