Balos while is one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete has a disadvantage. During the very hot days, you can sense an unpleasant smell due to the muddy and shallow waters. The smell becomes noticeable especially the days with no wind. Fortunately, even the smallest breeze makes the smell to go away. In case you are in Balos and you can tolerate the smell just keep your distance from the shallow waters and prefer the open deep blue sea outside of the lagoon.

At Balos you can't find any facilities so it's better to get water amd lunch with you. The last years some umbrellas were added but if you don't come to the beach very early in the morning you will not be able to book one.
