Kaloí Liménes, Lasithi, Greece
This beach on the east side of the small village Kaloi Limenes in southern Crete is named Makria Ammos (long sand). The beach that has length more than a kilometer is also known with the names Armirikia or Dentra (trees) because of the many Tamarisk trees that can be found there. In the past, you could find a small village under these Tamarisk trees made up by campers that permanently (all year long) installed their tents there. Fortunately, the city has now cleaned up the beach and everyone can enjoy the thick shadow of these trees

So you are at this remote beach where the nearest living soul lies one kilometer away from you, and you have a watermelon that is really hot from the sun and no knife to cut it open? Just drop it in the sea for half an hour. The cool water will lower the temperature of the watermelon enough to make it enjoyable and refreshing. Then hit it hard against a rock and it will crack open in half.

Kokkinos Pirgos
67 kilometers South West of Heraklion there is this small village called Kokkinos Pirgos. The name translates to red castle and it is considered that the village got this name from an old tower that existed there and was made with red soil. If you are in its long and sandy beach you can see the two small uninhabited islands Paximadia which from this location they look as one island

The eleventh labour of Herakles was to steal the golden apples from the garden of Hesperides. The trees were a gift from Gaia to Hera and Zeus for their wedding and their golden fruits were able to give immortality to those that eat them. This garden was thought to be located at the Iberian peninsula where today Portugal is. That's why in modern Greek the golden apples or oranges are called with the word 'portokali' which means 'something from Portugal'
